Why it redefines the standards of connected watches

How It Redefines the Standards for Smartwatches

Technical performances that push the limits

Revolutionary autonomy for demanding users

If you’ve already owned an Apple Watch, you probably know this frustration: Having to recharge it daily. The ultra completely changes the situation with an announced autonomy of 36 hours in normal use – I even managed to hold almost 40 hours during my tests, with a few notifications and two sports sessions.

Even more impressive, the energy saving mode allows to reach up to 60 hours of autonomy. Enough to go into a trek of several days without worrying about the battery. This distance performance largely the other Apple Watch models, which are generally struggling to exceed 18 hours of use.

Autonomy comparison between Apple Watch models:

  • Apple Watch Series 8: About 18 hours
  • Apple Watch SE: About 18 hours
  • Apple Watch Ultra: 36 to 60 hours depending on the mode

This record autonomy is not just a marketing argument, it is a real change of use that transforms the relationship to the device. We go from a gadget that must be recharged every evening to a reliable companion for several days of adventure. ????

Power and responsiveness to the user service

The S8 chip that drives the Ultra Apple Watch is not just one more technical component. It is the beating heart that allows this watch to be so reactive. I noticed that even with several applications in the background and constant measurements, the watch never slows down – unlike my old series 5 which could sometimes show signs of fatigue.

This power is particularly felt in data management. Whether you analyze your 3D trail route or consult your detailed heart metrics, everything is instantly displayed. Moreover, during a mountain race, I was able to switch between different views without any delay, even with GPS and cardiac sensors operating at full speed.

Exclusive features for athletes and adventurers

Professional level activity monitoring

The Apple Watch Ultra goes far beyond a simple step counter. It has advanced sensors that compete with professional sports equipment. The heart rate meter seems particularly precise – I compared its measurements with a poctoral belt Polar during an interval training session, and the differences were minimal.

What really distinguishes ultra is its exclusive metrics:

  • Power areas in running
  • Vertical analysis of the oscillation
  • Floor contact time

These data were previously reserved for specialized watches like those of Garmin or Coros. Apple clearly did its homework to seduce serious athletes.

The watch also offers applications dedicated to extreme sports. The diving mode is particularly impressive, transforming your watch into a certified diving computer up to 40 meters. A diver friend told me that he found the measures surprisingly reliable for a device that is not exclusively dedicated to this activity.

Geolocation and peak navigation

Double frequency GPS (L1/L5) is probably one of the most significant advances. In dense urban areas or under forest cover, where other connected watches often lose the signal, the ultra continues to draw your journey with remarkable precision.

I tested this function during a hike in a particularly dense forest. The GPS trace remained impeccable, while my smartphone showed deviations of several meters in places.

The compass and the always active altimeter also change the situation for hikers. No need to activate a specific application – information is available instantly. And the “Return on Trace” function saved me during an excursion where I had taken a little marked path. In a few seconds, I was able to view the course to follow to return to the starting point. ????

Security and communication: Innovation that saves lives

Unique safety alerts and functions

The Apple Watch ultra incorporates an emergency mermaid of 86 decibels – a sound level comparable to that of a domestic alarm. It is not a gadget: in the mountains or in isolated areas, this functionality can literally save lives. It can be activated by keeping the action button for a few seconds.

The falling detection, already present on the previous models, has been improved and supplemented by an accident detection. The watch is able to distinguish a simple fall from a more serious accident and adjust its response accordingly.

Integration with emergency services is also pushed a notch further. In the event of a problem, the watch can not only call for help, but also send them your precise position and essential medical data such as your blood group or your known allergies – provided that you have informed this information beforehand.

Optimized communication even in isolated areas

The three microphones integrated into ultra do wonders in noisy environments. I was able to take a call in the middle of a storm during an outing at sea, and my interlocutor heard perfectly despite the violent wind.

The cell connection also seems more robust than on standard models. In some areas where my iPhone struggled to capture, the watch maintained a sufficient connection to send messages or even make a call.

And of course, compatibility with the SOS emergency function by satellite (on the iPhone 14 and more) completes this safety arsenal. In theory, you could end up without a cellular network and still alert help via your associated iPhone – a feature that I fortunately did not have to test in real conditions! Apple Watch ultra user experience on a daily basis

Personalization and comfort of use

The bracelets are often overlooked in connected watches tests, but Apple has really hit hard with the three options specific to ultra. I had the opportunity to try the trail bracelet for a few weeks – it is incredibly light and adjusts perfectly even during intense sports sessions. The Alpine bracelet offers additional security for mountain activities, while the Ocean is designed to withstand salt water and adapt over a diving combination.

What really changes the situation on a daily basis is the Action button. Unlike other buttons that have predefined functions, it is fully programmable. I configured it to directly launch my favorite running application, but you could just as well use it to activate the torch lamp or start a stopwatch. It is frankly practical when you have wet hands or you wear gloves.

The Watchos interface has been subtly adapted to take advantage of this large screen. Exclusive dials like “Wayfinder” display an impressive amount of information without appearing overloaded. Moreover, the night mode which transforms the interface into red is great to preserve the night vision during outings at dawn or at dusk.

Apple ecosystem and compatibility

If you are already in the Apple ecosystem, the ultra fits perfectly. Synchronization with the iPhone is almost instantaneous, and interaction with other products such as AirPods works as if by magic. For example, I was able to control my music directly from my watch during a race, without having to touch my phone.

In terms of third -party applications, most developers quickly adapted their interfaces to exploit the additional screen size. Strava, Alltrails or Komot work remarkably well. However, some more confidential apps have not yet been optimized – a small downside that should be corrected over time.

Value for money: a justified investment?

Price positioning in the face of competition

Let’s be frank: the Ultra Apple Watch is not given. At 999 €, it costs almost double a series 8. However, when compared to high -end multisport watches like the Garmin Fenix 7 or certain Suunto models, the price seems more justified.

Positioning in relation to competition:

  • Apple Watch Series 8 (aluminum): from € 499
  • Garmin Fenix 7: from € 699
  • SUUNTO 9 PEAK PRO: around € 629
  • Apple Watch Ultra: € 999

What makes the difference is sustainability. After a few months of intensive use, my watch shows no signs of wear. Titanium and sapphire glass do their job perfectly. If we consider that ultra could easily last 4-5 years (against 2-3 years for a classic Apple Watch), the investment takes on its full meaning. ????

Who is the Apple Watch Ultra really essential?

Let’s be honest, not everyone needs an ultra. If you are a triathlete, a mountaineer, a diver or just someone who regularly pushes her outdoor limits, then yes, this watch is made for you. Its robustness and specific features largely justify the investment.

For professionals who work in difficult environments (construction, first aid, exploration …), Ultra also offers considerable advantages. The combination of sustainability, autonomy and security functions makes it a potentially precious tool.

And for the daily non-sporting user? It’s more questionable. You will pay for features that you will probably never use. That said, if you appreciate prolonged autonomy, the larger screen and the distinctive design, why not? After all, many buy diving watches without ever approaching a reef …
