The Apple Watch Ultra 2 laid the foundations: 49 mm titanium housing, bi -fequence GPS, Action button, 36 h of autonomy (up to 72 hours in economics mode), SIRI chip with Siri on the device and gesture “touch twice”, and above all an OLED screen with 3,000 nits, the most bright never seen on an Apple Watch. This is the current reference.
For the Apple Watch Ultra 3, the serious signals point to a pragmatic evolution, not a big evening of design: same philosophy of housing, internal priorities (health, connectivity, screen efficiency). The large microled slab ruptures seem to be postponed, Apple remaining on optimized OLED LTPO.
High mountain athletes, divers and guides did not ask for a “new look”. They want a reliable tool: brushed titanium, sapphire glasses, oversized button handling with gloves, powerful speaker and second speaker for alarms, resistances 100 m / MIL - STD. Ultra 3 has all the reasons to renew this grammar - a guarantee of interoperability with already proven bracelets and accessories. On this point, Ultra 2 remains a safe bet today.
The Ultra 2 fixed the bar at 3,000 nits, with drop to 1 nit at night and a torch lamp which still “pushes” the brightness via the digital crown. It is formidably effective in full sun, at sea or on glacier. Ultra 3 should capitalize: same display technology, but possible gains in efficiency, anti -reflective and PWM management for comfort on long outings. No “big evening” Microled in the short term according to the best public sources.
Watchos 11 has brought a more intelligent base: Vitals (synthesis of night metrics, alerts when several indicators leave the usual area) and training load (training load on 7 vs 28 days). On Ultra 2, these functions already transform the data into concrete decisions: lifting the foot before the ultra-trail, monitoring a post-course recovery, identifying a morning anomaly before a plunged outing.
For Ultra 3, major expectations concerns “trendy” hypertension (drift detection rather than systole/diastole systems). Bloomberg has been talking about it since 2023; More recent notes say that the tests continue and that the calendar remains delicate. If the function arrives, it will serve as a tracking trigger, no diagnosis. To date, nothing official on its commercial availability or on the covered markets. Caution.
Ultra 2 combines GPS L1+L5 very precise, UWB of 2nd generation to locate and restore objects, Bluetooth 5.X, Wi -Fi and LTE ESIM. In real life: clean traces in the forest, fluid navigation in the mountains, AirPods found by the minute at the bottom of a bag. We expect the ultra 3 of radio efficiency (better grip, energy management, refined UWB) and, perhaps, the adoption of recent cell standards intended for connected objects (“Reduced capability” profiles). But these tracks remain of the order of the plausible, not confirmed.
Real 36 h in mixed use on Ultra 2, more in economics mode for two -day raids, are already enough to cover a weekend engaged with light ravitos and punctual recharge on external battery. The Ultra 3 is expected at the turn of efficiency: same size, but better resistance to cold, radio optimization and less energy -consuming screen. The margins are played here.
The hard watch is the one that improves without changing your reflexes. On Ultra 2, Watchos 11 brought tangible benefits without relearning the watch: smarter alerts, extended GPS routes, contextualized health metrics. Ultra 3 will capitalize on this base - and that's very good.
Methodological note we rely on official sources (Apple Newsroom) for Ultra 2 and Watchos 11, and on renowned reports (Bloomberg relayed by MacRumors/Notebookcheck) for Ultra 3 prospects. No unconfirmed promises: Advanced health functions remain subject to local tests and authorizations.
