The world of watchmaking has always been a constantly growing sector in which refinement and imagination are the two keys to success for the creation of original timepieces.
Sometimes, to create unique watches that stand out from the crowd, the fashion houses make use of collaborations with other brands which, in most cases, are external to this sector.
And it is thanks to these collaborations with entities outside the world of watchmaking that Hublot has created the new Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin.
It is a completely unique and innovative watch, as regards the use of materials, created together with the most famous Swiss coffee giant in the world.
Hublot and Nespresso
Since its inception in 1980, Hublot has always stood out in the panorama of haute horlogerie for its familiarity with the use and combination of innovative materials. We even dedicated an entire video to this during our visit to the Nyon manufactory.
A peculiarity that has resulted in what is defined as Hublot’s “Art of Fusion” and that we can find in all its philosophy within the new collaboration with Nespresso. At this point we could rightly ask ourselves what is the link between a Swiss watchmaking maison and a Swiss coffee company.
The link that gave birth to the collaboration lies precisely in Hublot’s ability to use innovative materials, to the point of allowing it to create the new Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin with recycled Nespresso capsules and coffee grounds. It is therefore a highly sustainable choice that combines in perfect harmony with the visions of both companies.
On the one hand, in fact, as we have already said, Hublot is a brand that has never backed down in the face of new challenges in making watches with unusual materials. In addition to this, the environmentalist vein of the Swiss brand is not surprising, which in the past has already seen itself as the protagonist of initiatives to protect African fauna, such as for the Big Bang Unico Sorai. On the other hand, however, there is the support of Nespresso in supplying recycled materials in full compliance with its reuse philosophy according to the “Second Life” initiative.
In fact, in 1991, the coffee giant introduced a recycling system capable of separating the aluminum of the capsules from the used coffee, allowing each component to be reused. Thanks to this system, Nespresso has been able to collaborate with prestigious brands to create new products using the aluminum of the exhausted capsules. A collaboration that we also find today with Hublot and thanks to which the values of innovation, excellence and sustainability are promoted.
Hublot Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin
Take a Nespresso coffee capsule and insert it into the machine to make yourself a good coffee. After that, once the capsules have been recycled at the points of sale, the company will take care of supplying the materials to Hublot to create an exclusive Big Bang.
It is precisely from a simple coffee pod that the new Hublot model comes to life, equipped with a 42 mm diameter case in recycled aluminum, 28% coming from Nespresso capsules, and subsequently anodized with a lively green. It is one of the most representative colors for Nespresso, which we also find on the “Master Origins Peru Organic” coffee capsule.
We had the opportunity to try the watch on our wrist during the world presentation in Geneva and the result is truly exceptional. The first thing that strikes you is, without any doubt, the sheen of the green colour, aided by a perfectly fitting satin finish on the case.
The bezel and winding crown, personalized with the Nespresso logo, also made from recycled aluminium, are placed between the satin-finished surfaces of the case, set against the polished parts. Still on the case, at 2 and 4 o’clock, there are buttons, in recycled aluminium, to operate the chronograph whose indications are shown on the skeletonized dial.
At 3 o’clock is the 60-minute chronograph counter (which also houses the date) and at 9 o’clock, on the other hand, there is the continuous seconds counter.
Through the sapphire crystal opening of the Eco-Titanium (recycled titanium) case back, it is possible to observe the HUB1280 in-house caliber, self-winding, with a power reserve of approximately 72 hours. The matte-finished caliber is also very pleasing to the eye.
The two straps, always green, are made in a completely exclusive way and always with the “eco-friendly” vision of the watch. Attached to the case with Hublot’s patented “One Click” interchangeable strap system, we find a rubber strap containing 4.1% spent coffee from recycled Nespresso capsules and 8.2% recycled rubber.
If the first strap is a classic rubber strap, the second strap definitely steals the show thanks to its ergonomics. It is the result of the collaboration between Hublot and SingTex, a Nespresso partner who had previously used used coffee to create the “S.Café” fabric. This is a 100% recycled fabric band and made from 5% waste coffee and 95% recycled polyester.
This new watch is presented in Hublot’s new Greenbox case, made entirely of oak, with removable components inside made from eco-friendly recycled PET, plastic and fabric threads.
