There Carrera is a model of excellence at Tag Heuer, fully inspired by the spirit of motor racing in 1963, its year of birth. In 2023, it therefore celebrates its 60th anniversary and comes out full of vigor with several proposals from the brand which has gone all out to celebrate this anniversary as it should be.
On the program, new versions, including the Carrera “Glassbox”as well as a Hollywood short film in which it appears as a central prop.
A Hollywood film for Carrera’s 60th birthday
At Tag Heuer, the year 2023 is marked by the 60th anniversary of its iconic racing chronograph: the Carrera. And to celebrate this very special occasion, the Swiss luxury watchmaker has decided to launch a 5-minute Hollywood action comedy called The Chase for Carrera.
A very daring idea, especially since the cast is quite impressive with, as main actors, Ryan Gosling (brand ambassador) and Vanessa Bayer, while the director is none other than the Australian Nash Edgerton.
In this quirky short, Ryan Gosling, after finishing an action scene and chatting with David Leitch’s, tries to keep his Carrera on the wrist, while a filming technician (Vanessa Bayer) makes him understand that he must absolutely return it. The actor then decides to flee with his precious watch, continuing with a chase between the two actors driving various stolen vehicles along the way.
In short, a funny and brilliant short film, with the famous watch as its central star. An idea that changes traditional advertisements, and which this time relies on humor rather than the usual ultra-luxury and serious aspect.
Apart from this funny and aesthetically very successful film production, the brand also released new designs for the emblematic chronograph for the anniversary, as well as a new model: the Carrera “Glassbox”.
New Carrera “Glassbox”
After briefly talking about it in our article on the new chronographs discovered at the Watch and Wonders 2023 show, we come back here specifically to the Carrera “Glassbox”.
This new chronograph is displayed in a signature blue look on the dial and the leather strap. Its 39 mm stainless steel case includes the crown at 3 o’clock surrounded by two pushers used to operate the chronograph functions.
The particularity of this news Carrera sits in the domed sapphire crystal, hence the name “Glassbox”. A choice that gives roundness and volume to the watch. Below, the dial is surrounded by an integrated tachymeter scale. Unlike the other models, there is therefore no bezel on the outer rim, but rather a flange directly attached to the curved glass, thus leaving a large space on the dial, for impeccable readability.
In the centre, you can see the inverted Tricompax layout, with the date window integrated into the small seconds counter at 6 o’clock. The indexes and hands are filled with luminescent material, the soft green of which is appreciated in the dark, for excellent reading of the time.
The new Carrera “Glassbox” embeds an in-house automatic movement, caliber TH20-00, with an oscillation of 28,800 vph, a very fine 80-hour power reserve, and chronograph functions (1/4 second, 30 minutes, 12 hours) in addition to the date.
This model is also available in another more retro version with a perforated black leather strap and a black dial with white counters. The watch worn in the short film by Ryan Gosling is the blue one, which remains our favorite.
